Prague 5th – 8th April 2002

On the commercial fishing for blue fin tuna (Thunnus thunnus)

The European Anglers´ Alliance, EAA, represents 18 nations with over five million affiliated anglers and acts to protect the interests of 25 million anglers throughout Europe.

It was noted that no measurement aiming at restoring stocks had been taken to date in spite of the identical requests formulated in 1996, 2000 and 2001.

Once again, the EAA requires of ICCAT and the European Community to take into account the recommendations of the scientific Committee of ICCAT taking care of:

bulletto respect the minimum weight of 6,4 kg as well as the quotas defined by ICCAT;
bulletto bring a total biological halt to fishing by trawlers using lines and seine nets from late May to mid July corresponding to the breeding season in the spawning grounds off the Balearic Islands;
bulletto organize and carry out controls on the ships continuing to fish during the period of closing recommended by ICCAT and the European Community
