Hydropower – The rivers need your help

The coming years will be crucial for our rivers. The Water Framework Directive is up for revision. The hydropower industry asks lobby donations to “re-activate up to 350,000 former hydro plants and ...sites across Europe”.

This to be achieved by engaging “in the preparation for a revised, hydropower-friendly, Water Framework Directive in 2017. The Commission will start this task from 2015 onwards.”

Needless to say that EAA and its member organisations are not happy about this move. Donations are most welcome from anglers and other ‘green people’, who also worry about our rivers and the life in them.

Angling organisations are often in a better position to fight damaging hydropower than other NGOs. On top of the environmental issues, which all NGOs can argue and try bring to court, angling organisations often can argue additionally (economic) damage done to our fisheries interests and/or fishing rights.
